1945: Während der Besetzung Koreas werden 400 Koreaner von den Japanern zur Zwangsarbeit auf die Insel Hashima gebracht. Da diese von Weitem wie ein Kriegsschiff aussieht, wird sie nur „Battleship Island“ genannt. Unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen riskieren die Gefangenen in den Schächten einer Kohlemine täglich ihr Leben. Unter ihnen befinden sich auch Lee Kang-ok, der junge Vater einer kleinen Tochter, der Unruhestifter Choi Chil-sung und Park Moo-young, ein Mitglied des koreanischen Widerstands. Zusammen mit den anderen Insassen planen sie einen Aufstand - und ihre Flucht von der Hölleninsel.
